In China palmistry is traditionally a part of the famous scene of the ‘Traditional Chinese Medicine‘ (TCM). The history of the chinese palmistry goes back to the earliest origins of the Zhou Dynasty (1122-770 BCE). |
The earliest important Chinese discussion of palmistry is found in the Gu Ge Pian (Writings on the Skeleton), also known as Gu Xiang (Appearances on Bones), written by the scholar Wang Chong in the late part of the Han Dynasty (206 BCE-220 CE).
In China today, biologist, psychologists, and sociologists as well as the above-mentioned anthropologists, geneticists, and physicians are all engaged in substantiating the age-old wisdom on human health and disease contained in Chinese palmistry.
traditional Chinese medicine doctors say they can study your palm and learn about the state of your heart, healthwise. The handpalm color (pink is healthy), appearance of the veins and the lunula of the fingernails (white crescent at the base of the fingernail) are all important indicators of health in ‘Traditional Chinese Medicine’ (TCM).

Palmistry expertise from India: The ancient history of Palmistry is a bit sketchy. India is often described as the birth place of modern Palm Reading. The culture of India presents some old Hindu writings which appear to explain why Palmistry is still a significant part of the culture in modern India! |
However, the origins of Palmistry are shrouded in mystery and believed to date at least three thousand years ago.
‘Hasta Samudrika Shastra’, ‘Ravana Samhita’ and ‘Hasth Sanjeevani” are some of the famous ancient Hindi books on palmistry, which are available even today. The ancient documents of India take us back to the prehistoric period of the Aryan civilization.
However, translations of these old Indian documents are very rare. One is presented by the Indian palmist V.A.K. Ayer, titled: ‘SARIRAKA SASTRA: The Indian science of Hand Reading based on the Kartikeyan system’. But the author admits that far most modern palmists have no access to the old dcouments and know little about the roots of Vedic Palmistry.

Palmistry experts in Nepal:
Palmistry is extremely popular in Nepal; in 2007 the Nepal Phalit Research Astrology Council (NPRAC), reported that there are 25,000 palmists registered in Nepal! |
Nepal has a rich culture of ‘roadside palmists’, usually they are fortunetellers – by the way there are reports which say that quite a lot of them have no knowledge of palmistry at all…!!! A report from the streets of Dolakha:
“I think there are more than two thousand footpath fortune tellers in the capital; on an average day, more than half-a-dozen people visit me to know their future. On an odd day, there might be no customer, though,” said Krishna Raj Giri, a palmist from Dolakha.
Except for these roadside fortune tellers, the rest of the palmists in Nepal (e.g. Kathmandu & Pokhara) are leading a good enough life with earnings from the profession, according to the Council of the Nepal Phalit Research Astrology.
However the palmists from Nepal hardly play a role in the ‘global’ history of palmistry. Below you can find the website of a few palmists & palm readers from Nepal.
